Det 485 History

Here at Detachment 485 we have a proud history of producing only the highest quality leaders and Airmen! In 1946 Army Chief of Staff Dwight Eisenhower signed a charter selecting Rutgers University to host one of the first Air ROTC units, and the detachment was later established in 1951.  We are one of the oldest and original AFROTC detachments in the country (predating even the formation of the Air Force as a separate branch of service. It is older than the Air Force Academy and older than Air Force Officer Training School). In 2009 we added to our long history and heritage by naming our detachment after the secret Forward Air Controllers (FACs) that operated in Laos during the Vietnam War known as “The Ravens”.
